Why I Know Nutrition Is About Habits Not Food …..
You might be shocked at this pic, yes, that’s me. This was taken around 15 years ago.
I was definitely eating and drinking too much, not exercising enough. Regarding nutrition, the issue wasn’t ‘what foods to eat’, or ‘calorie balance’, or ‘how much carbs I needed’ or ‘clean eating’ (the stuff us trainers hear).
The issue was what was going on INSIDE me — and how I was FEELING, the HABITS I had developed, what my life was like.
You see, I wasn’t feeling too good. (Shocking eh?)
Frustrated at my career, I felt lonely, unfulfilled in life, no direction, felt I hadn’t reached any potential. Self-esteem was pretty low.
As a consequence, I didn’t take care of myself. Didn’t prioritise health, joy, challenges, happiness. I just masked my pain with food and drink. It was an easier option I guess.
So I’m fairly convinced that issues with nutrition are pretty much our HABITS, and often how we’re FEELING (not knowledge about nutrition).
I feel we’re surrounded by information and we could all provide a fairly good idea about how we should be eating. It’s the ‘doing it’ that appears to be the issue.
This is why I place so much value on mindset and feel improving nutrition is improving habits, not being handed a sheet of ‘good’ foods.
What we think is who we are.
